SILFIRE intends to develop sylvicultural management models that take into account the risk of large wildland fires in order to increment fire resistance of fire-prone forest. In areas where forest management is insignificant due to the low economic profitability of the forest, efficient sylvicultural itineraries will allow the management of fire prone areas.

Resumen:
Fuel management principles for reducing fire hazard are well known, although the effects of these treatments on fire behaviour are less obvious. Reducing surface fuels, increasing live to crown base height, decrease crown density and keeping big trees of resistant species are basic principles followed when fuel management strategies are implemented. However, these principles are somewhat general. There is an increasing need of models and technical and numerical data that enables a real management of forest areas.
SILFIRE will provide an exchange of knowledge in relation to the management of fire prone areas and it will also establish measures in order to develop fuel management strategies in high risk areas through the interaction of different countries. Fire is a major disturbance that affects the dynamics of vegetation and landscape being necessary the integration of fire hazard in forest management models. Wildfires are a shared problem in SUDOE countries, along with the effects of global change, and can be mitigated though a process in which countries work together towards common goals.
GENERAL OBJECTIVES
1) To develop efficient sylvicultural itineraries that increment forest fire resistance and to provide numerical data through the analysis of the efficiency of different fuel treatments in permanent plots of fire prone species at stand level in order to help forest managers in future fuel management decisions.
2) To promote forest management in fire prone areas with low production and profitability.
3) To reduce deforestation, degradation and biodiversity looses of areas neglected by wildfires through the investment in forest management.
IMPACT OF THE PROJECT.
SILFIRE will implement forest management models that will decrease the likelihood of high severity wildfires in the study area. In addition, it will promote the exchange of knowledge between the different Mediterranean countries involved. In this way, the efficiency of future sylvicultural itineraries will be expanded to other areas apart from the study zone.
The establishment of these itineraries will provide the following benefits:
- Reduced damage to forested areas due to high severity wildfire.
- Reduced likelihood of active crown fire.
- Enhanced ability to suppress or control fires.
- Establishment of monitoring plots and demonstration site for community education with regards to fuel reduction treatments.
In the SUDOE area, forest management has been reduced because of the low values of forest products creating a continuous landscape more prone to fire. This, together with a high recurrence of large wildfire has incremented the potential for damaging wildfires. The factors mentioned above make necessary the development of forest management models that integrate fire hazard and are, also, sustainable from an economical and social point of view.
