Objectifs:
The main objective of the present Project is to establish strategies to reduce the urban development impact on the coastal communities of the northwestern Mediterranean coast with the compromise to maintain the biodiversity and preserve the ecosystems. Therefore it is intended to develop and evaluate designs of coastal structures inspired by the principle of Ecological-Engineering, as well as diffusing and promoting its application. The lines of action to address are the following. - Research and innovation in the application of Ecological-Engineering techniques adequate to the particularities of the different coastal habitats of the northwestern Mediterranean vase; collaboration between ecologists and engineers to design and evaluate those structures that better preserve the biodiversity of each area. - Promotion and awareness rising of the application of the Ecological-Engineering in the construction of new structures as well as in the renewal of the existing ones.
Résumé:
The natural attraction of the Mediterranean vase has conducted to an increasing concentration of the population at the coast side, significantly increasing the pressure on the marine ecosystems. The human activity together with the progressive expansion of the populations, have generated and generate an increase of the urbanization in coastal areas, increasing the artificial habitats at the intertidal and shallow-water habitats, with the consequent loss of biodiversity. The Mediterranean Sea is known for its biodiversity, as well as for the high level of endemisms, being therefore a region of indubitable ecological value. It is totally necessary to establish preservation strategies for the local biodiversity and natural wealth, which also redound positively in the economical marine sectors such as fishing or tourism. The Ecological-Engineering unifies the efforts of engineering and ecology in favor of designing structures that support and promote the biodiversity, in an aim to integrate the human society with its natural environment for a mutual benefit. The object is to promote the design of artificial habitats that resemble as much as possible to the natural ones and that enable the maintenance and development of the communities as close as they would be in their natural status. During the last decades the awareness is rising towards an engineering that respects and promotes the preservation of the environment; we find important actions in building construction, nevertheless little has been done towards the design of coastal structure such as breakwaters, piers or docks. Some previous studies indicate options to minimize the impact on the coastal area, nevertheless, it is necessary to generate and test strategies adequate for the coast of the northwestern Mediterranean vase, adjusting the designs to the oceanographic, biological and geomorphological particularities of each area. Therefore it is basic to identify optimal techniques to apply in the different sensitive habitats throughout the whole length of the northwestern coast of the Mediterranean and establish promotion and diffusion means for the same. With the present Project the following objectives are pursued: - Promotion of the preservation of the biodiversity of the northwestern Mediterranean vase. - Break with the homogeneity of the artificial structures of the coastal line, generating diversity in the habitats that increases the species biodiversity and the abundance of the individuals. - Avoid the establishment of invasive species. - Innovate and evaluate adequate techniques for the different habitats. - Establish economical and simple design tools. - Promotion and disclosure. - Exchange of methods of good practice in construction and management of the coastal area.
