Priorité:
Medio Ambiente: Cambio climático
Objectifs:
The main goal of the project is to innovate, test, validate and communicate the use of complementary resources (grey water recycling, stormwater use and reuse of water with primary and secondary purification) in sustainable water management in SUDOE cities.
Résumé:
BACKGROUND AND PROBLEM. Water, as a scarce resource, must be protected while improving the quality of life and social welfare of citizens. In 1800 only a 1% of the world population lived in cities of over 10,000 inhabitants, while in 1960 this proportion was about 20% and is expected to reach the 65% in 2025. The concentration of the population around the cities progressively increases the pressure on natural resources and the environment, even in regions where there is no water shortage problems. In the past, efforts to meet the growing demand consisted mainly of increasing the supply of resources, which were plentiful and relatively inexpensive. However, the relationship between extraction and water availability has become a major issue in the exploitation of water resources in Europe. It is therefore logical that the study of the sustainable use of water become more focused on the ability to influence water demand. As a consequence, various policies and mechanisms are being currently formulated to ensure a sustainable use of water over time. This project is aimed to address the following issues that the partnership has identified as crucial and deficient: • The need for effective solutions for sustainable water management in cities allowing a more optimized use of water, an increased water reutilization and a reduction on the impacts over the receiving ecosystem. • Lack of social awareness that allows ensuring the success of projects on sustainable water management through gray water recycling, rainwater utilization and reuse of treated water. • Insufficient local tools for sustainable management of municipal water due to insufficient characterization of gray waters and inadequate characterization and typology of storm water and air pollution deposition techniques to design sustainable urban drainage and efficient (TDUS). • Difficulties to implement new forms of sustainable water management. • Insufficient evaluation on economic, social and environmental costs associated to different resource management systems. INTERMEDIATE GOALS • To improve the protection of water resources and contribute to the optimal use of water resources. • To identify good practices in sustainable water management through the use of complementary measures (gray water recycling, stormwater use and reuse of treated water). • To develop and communicate best practices in sustainable water management at the municipal level • To create and implement management and planning tools that enable the introduction of sustainable policies, long term, the use and protection of water resources and associated ecosystems. • To share different experiences of integrated water management to establish bonds of cooperation and exchange permanent SUDOE regions (Spain, France and Portugal). • To monitor and evaluate pilot experiences and results. • Provide information and encourage public participation in water management.
