Project summary

VALUEPAM aims to improve the administration, planning, and assessment of the sector of aromatic and medicinal plants (plantas aromático-medicinales, PAM) and their use as a tool of economic development in natural spaces and rural areas of south-west European countries. In order to do so the project intends to carry out an exhaustive study of the sector and to establish a common methodology of the drawing up of plans for the management and the economic exploitation of these plants. So as to put the theory into practice, VALUEPAM will carry out Pilot Actions of their cultivation and marketing that will subsequently be transferred to the administrations and the companies.

Estado de avance del proyecto

The project improves the management, planning and valuation of the aromatic-medicinal plants (PAM) sector and its use as an economic development tool in the natural areas and rural areas of the countries of South-West Europe. For this, the project carried out an exhaustive study of the sector and developed a common methodology for drafting management plans and economic use of these plants as well as pilot actions.

Among its project results, it is worth highlighting:

  • The study of the PAM selected by regions.
  • A proposal for a common methodology for the creation of management plans and use of maps.
  • Maps of location of selected species and quantities.
  • Plan to improve the value chain of the selected species.
  • An action model for the diversification of the use of PAMs.
  • A pilot project of local application, oriented to the improvement of the transformation of the PAM and the local development of the value chain.
  • A pilot project of sustainable domestication and primary transformation to improve its profitability and market potential.
  • A pilot project to extrapolate management models to implement transnational successes and avoid the alarming decrease of wild locations.

The results of the project were collected by the Junta de Andalucía that has integrated them into its legislation.
